Creating Alerts
Create an alert from the chart, an indicator or Quant, then choose its frequency, schedule and destinations.
Sign in and open a chart in Vela. Choose a Price Alert for a price condition, or a Custom Alert for an indicator or strategy condition.
Create a Price Alert
- Open Alerts from the right-hand panel rail and choose New alert. You can also right-click the price axis, or press Alt+A (Option+A on Mac) while the chart has focus.
- Choose the Condition and enter its price or bounds. Conditions include crossing a level, being above or below it, entering or leaving a channel, and moving up or down by an amount over a number of bars.
- Give the alert a name and choose its Frequency.
- Set when it is Active and when it Ends.
- Under Send to, select destinations or choose Add a destination. Expand a destination's message to customize it.
- Choose Create alert. The alert shows Arming, then Live once the servers confirm it.
Edit an alert on the chart
Price Alerts with levels appear as dashed lines on the relevant market. Drag a line to change its level; press Escape during the drag to cancel. Click the line's handle to open the editor. Its × asks for confirmation before deleting the alert.
For supported drawings, the drawing's context menu can create an alert tied to it. Moving the drawing updates that alert's condition. Use the alert editor to review the trigger and settings.
Create a Custom Alert
From an indicator or strategy
- Add the indicator or strategy to your chart, then select the bell on its legend.
- Choose Auto-create with Quant to have Quant propose a condition, or use the form to select an available condition or line, comparison and target.
- Review the condition and its historical preview. Check the market, timeframe, frequency and destinations.
- Choose Create to start it. Use Edit first if the proposal needs a change.
Available conditions depend on the tool. Some built-in indicators or protected scripts do not expose their lines to the form. Follow the message shown in the menu, or choose Open in Quant to explain the condition you want. If asked to save or check a script first, complete that step before creating its alert.
With Quant
Ask Quant, our coding agent, for the condition and markets you want to watch. For example:
Set up a Custom Alert when RSI crosses above 30 on my current chart, once the bar closes.
Quant can preview the condition and propose an alert for you to review. For a condition across several markets or a watchlist, specify that in your request; the markets-per-alert limit still applies. Review the proposed settings and confirm creation on its card.
A historical preview shows how the condition behaved in the checked period. It does not predict how often it will fire in the future.
Script changes
An alert on a script runs a saved snapshot of its code and inputs. Editing the chart's script or changing its inputs does not automatically update an existing alert. Recreate the alert from the updated script when you want it to use those changes.
Frequency
| Choice | When it fires |
|---|---|
| Only once | The first time the condition is met, then stops. Free Custom Alerts check this on closed bars. |
| Once per bar | At most once per bar, as soon as the condition is met. |
| Once per bar close | When a bar closes with the condition met. |
| Once per minute | At most once a minute while the condition is met. |
| Every time | Each time the condition is met, spaced by the minimum interval you set. |
For Custom Alerts, frequencies that act while a bar is forming require Essential or above. A condition met during a forming bar may no longer be true at its close. Choose Once per bar close when you want a closed-bar check.
Schedule, ending and delivery
Active can be Always, During the market session only, or During set hours. For set hours, choose the days, times and time zone.
Ends can be Never, At a date and time, or After a number of fires. An alert set to Only once stops after its first fire even if Ends is Never.
Under Send to, check each destination you want. Each can have its own message. Notes are private notes for you. See Notifications and Destinations for setup and troubleshooting.
